The Intensive Care Unit provides care for children in need of continuous monitoring of vital functions and continuous oxygen treatment, permanent infusion, or mechanical ventilation for respiratory support. The most frequent patients are children suffering from severe pneumonia, obstructive bronchitis or asthma attack, pneumonia or asthma complications, cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiencies, heart failure or pulmonary hypertension.

The smooth functioning of the Unit relies on collaboration with the Clinical and Laboratory Diagnostics and Radiology and Ultrasound Units, as well as the Bronchology and Physical and Inhalation Therapy Units.

The sole fact of being admitted to the Unit does not necessarily mean that the child is vitally endangered or severely ill. This Unit admits patients for elective vaccination treatment due to the risk of adverse reactions to certian vaccines; it also admits children who are undergoing drug reaction tests, as well as those who are being tested for reactions to other substances, thus allowing for appropriate management in case of adverse reactions.

Healthy children are also being hospitalized for hyposensibilization in cases of being prone to severe reactions to some allergens (such as allergy to bee or wasp poison).
